The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the City of Cape Town’s (COCT) water rescue crews were activated on Saturday, January 1 following a fatal drowning incident at the tidal pool alongside the Sea Point Promenade.
According to the NSRI’s Table Bay station commander, Marc de Vos a couple staying in a block of flats opposite the Promenade had noticed the man in the water and alerted people.
“NSRI rescue swimmers, Law Enforcement officers, the SA Police Services, COCT lifeguards, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services and WC Government Health EMS responded.
“On arrival on the scene, an NSRI rescue swimmer entered the water where the German man was assisting to recover the lifeless body of a local man, believed to be aged in his 50’s, from the water,” De Vos said.

De Vos further mentioned that the NSRI’s rescue swimmer recovered the man onto rocks where paramedics declared the man to be deceased.
“The body of the man has been taken into the care of WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Police have opened an inquest docket,” De Vos explained.
