A man had fatally drowned at De Vette Mossel on Sunday, 12 February 2023, after entering the water, assuming his son was caught in a rip current. His son managed to get out of the water, but the man may have been caught in the current.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) duty crew responded to reports from the Police Dive Unit of a drowning in progress at De Vette Mossel, near the Great Brak River Mouth.
The NSRI rescue craft, St Blaize Rescuer, was launched with NSRI rescue swimmers on board.
Rescue teams from By Grace Ambulance Services, Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services, and SA Police Services responded directly to the scene.
On arrival at the scene, a 50-year-old man from Herolds Bay was recovered from the water. NSRI medics and paramedics assisted in CPR efforts, but after every effort to resuscitate the man was exhausted, he was declared deceased.
The body of the deceased was taken into the care of the police and the government’s Forensic Pathology Services.
The police have opened an inquest docket.
