An estimated 80 000 people are expected to gather at the Grand Parade and surrounding areas on Sunday, 1 December, for the City of Cape Town’s annual Festive Lights Switch-On, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The highly anticipated event marks the official start of summer and promises an unforgettable day of entertainment under the theme ‘People of Hope.’
The star-studded line-up includes a mix of rising talents and renowned artists, such as Carletheia, Dr. Victor & the Rasta Rebels, Mafikizolo, MÖRDA, and 3 Tons of Fun. Comedians Alan Committie and Lunga Tshuka will bring the laughs, while DJ Caycee will keep the crowd dancing. Adding to the excitement, winners of the recent Festive Lights Switch-On Comedy Competition will take the stage to showcase their talents.
Attendees will also enjoy the iconic video mapping of the City Hall, a dazzling spectacle that has become a hallmark of the event.
A safe and family-friendly celebration
The City of Cape Town is pulling out all the stops to ensure the safety and enjoyment of attendees. The Safety and Security Directorate, in partnership with the South African Police Service and private security teams, will be on high alert throughout the event.
‘The Festive Lights Switch-On is a highlight on Cape Town’s events calendar,’ said JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security. ‘For the past 55 years, it has offered a vibrant blend of live entertainment and dazzling festive lights. This year will be no different, and our priority is to create a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone.’
Attendees are urged to cooperate with event staff and adhere to the safety rules. The City will enforce a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol, illegal substances, fireworks, and dangerous weapons. Items such as umbrellas, gazebos, and gas spray cans are also prohibited.
Event Access and Kid Safety
- Gates open at 1pm, with searches conducted at 12 designated chutes.
- The KID SMART Project, located at City Hall, will offer temporary bracelets with parent contact details to ensure any lost children can be quickly reunited with their families.
Amenities and vendors
Water stations will be available at six locations across the event footprint, while food and snack vendors will operate on the Grand Parade and Lower Plain Street.
Transportation and road closures
To accommodate the event, the MyCiTi bus service will run extended hours, with a late-night service to Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, departing from the Civic Centre station at 11:35pm.
Road closures began on Tuesday and will continue until Tuesday, 3 December for setup and logistics. Adderley Street will remain closed to buses and taxis during this period. Full details of road closures and MyCiTi route deviations are available online.
