On Friday, former Police Minister Fikile Mbalula resigned as a Member of Parliament. He was sacked last month from his position as head of police by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The announcement of his resignation was made by the African National Congress (ANC). Mbalula is now based at Luthuli House, ANC headquarters, and is the Head of Elections for next year’s national vote.

According to Nonceba Mhlauli, spokesperson of Jackson Mthembu, Mbalula had already tendered his resignation on 26 February.

“While comrade Mbalula’s departure from Parliament will leave a void, we derive satisfaction from the knowledge that he will continue serving the movement as the ANC’s Head of Elections towards the 2019 General Elections campaign,” said Mhlauli.
