Firefighters from the George Fire Brigade are assisting with a vegetation fire that broke out today in Hartenbos Heuwels, Mossel Bay. Residents are reportedly evacuating their homes as the blaze has been advancing towards residential areas.

The fire is blazing between the R328 and the road leading to Oudtshoorn.

A grassfire sprung up at the Outeniqua Research Farm today as well at around the same time.

George municipal manager Thys Giliomee said he hopes that the Hartenbos Heuwels fire will soon be extinguished, and that no emergency evacuation notification has yet been issued for the area’s residents.

The Garden Route SPCA has deployed two bakkies from George and one from Mossed Bay to assist with any animals in danger in the area.

A Working On Fire spotter, fixed wing bomber and helicopter have been dispatched to the affected area.
