This morning, runners participating in the esteemed RMB Ultra-Trail Cape Town found themselves navigating an unforeseen hurdle as a fire in the Table Mountain National Park escalated during the event, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The South African National Parks (SANParks) reported that a volatile fire at Llandudno, specifically near Klein Leeukoppie, has prompted immediate safety measures and rerouting of available resources.
As strong winds continue to fan the flames, SANParks emphasised the potential for flare-ups throughout the day, calling upon all available firefighting resources.
Aerial support has been mobilised to combat the blaze that has already prompted containment efforts at the Rhodes Memorial Game Camp, where mop-up operations are currently being executed.
To ensure the safety of participants and visitors, park rangers are actively patrolling the area, supported by SANParks Honorary Rangers. The proactive measures include the deployment of a drone to monitor critical areas for any sign of danger as the race unfolds.

Additionally, as part of the safety protocol, the Newlands Picnic Site has been temporarily closed until 24 November and will serve as the final aid station for racers before they reach the finish line.
SANParks has assured that they remain in constant communication with the RMB Ultra-Trail Cape Town race organisers to ensure all necessary adjustments are made to keep participants safe.
Race organisers have been fully briefed on the situation; the possibility of rerouting race segments is on the table if conditions warrant such action.
In light of this, SANParks is urging all participants and visitors to diligently follow instructions issued by the race organisers and park personnel to ensure their safety and that of others.
