In a heart-stopping turn of events in Mitchells Plain, a dedicated firefighter’s quick action averted disaster, saving the life of a five-month-old infant, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday morning last week as Firefighter Michael Samuels was on duty in the Watch Room at the local fire station.
The emergency call came through from a resident, alerting Firefighter Samuels to a baby in distress at a nearby home. Without a moment to lose, Samuels sprang into action, demonstrating not only his bravery but also his extensive training by rushing to provide aid.
Upon arrival, Cachet Scala, the baby’s mother, was in a state of panic as she carried her son, Isaiah, into the fire station. Understanding the urgency of the situation, Firefighter Samuels immediately assessed the infant’s condition.
Recognising a blockage in Isaiah’s airway, he skilfully worked to clear it. His quick-thinking actions resulted in the immediate relief the baby needed, allowing him to breathe once again.
Following the successful manoeuvre, on the advice of the platoon’s senior medic, Firefighter Baigum Abrahams, Isaiah was transported to the hospital for further observation and care. What was a tense morning turned into a hopeful one as the infant received the necessary medical attention.
In a touching twist of fate, Firefighter Samuels later returned to the hospital to check on Isaiah’s condition. It was during this visit that he discovered it was not just any day— it was young Isaiah’s birthday, making the rescue not only a miraculous save but a special celebration of life.
City’s Mayco for Safety and Security, JP Smith took to social media to commend Firefighter Samuels for his heroism. “I want to commend him for his bravery—there can be no doubt that his actions saved Isaiah’s life. I am incredibly grateful to the mom for having the presence of mind to know that help was available at the Fire Station,’ he stated.
