Last night, the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service responded to train carriages which were alight in the Woodstock shunting yard.

“The initial response comprised of five firefighting appliances, a rescue vehicle and 21 staff members,” Jermaine Carelse, a City spokesperson, said. “Upon arrival, the Officer in Charge discovered that it was disused wooden carriages on different railway lines alight and additional resources were called upon.”

In the end, 10 firefighting appliances were on the scene fighting the fire.

The blaze was extinguished at 1.35am this morning. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was transported to hospital.

“The scene was handed over to Transnet,” Carelse said.
