For many kids in Cape Town, Easter came a bit sooner this year, not with big celebrations or bright lights, but with firefighters bringing boxes of sweets and small acts of kindness.
In a community-focused initiative timed for the holiday season, the City of Cape Town’s Fire & Rescue Service joined forces with retail partner Shoprite to distribute Easter treats to hundreds of young children, turning ordinary weekday visits into moments of celebration, as highlighted by the City.
As a result, the collaboration saw more than 300 children across four facilities receiving Easter gifts.

Instead of responding to emergencies, firefighters spent the day delivering marshmallow eggs, Easter treats and personal care items at Holy Cross Educare in Belhar, St. Anne’s Home and Lawrence House in Woodstock, and Olieboom Educare in Philippi.
Firefighters collectively contributed 60 boxes of marshmallow eggs, while Shoprite added Easter eggs and essential care products to the deliveries.
Reflecting on the outreach, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith the importance of small acts of kindness.
‘Our Firefighters love showing their sweet side and we are all for it. Thank you also to Shoprite for hopping on board with this initiative. These small acts go a long way, and help build positive relationships with our communities.’
