The City of Cape Town’s Fire & Rescue Service has kicked off the holiday season with a heartwarming gesture, bringing early Christmas cheer to children in care homes across the city, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Thanks to a generous partnership with Pick n Pay, firefighters have been delivering wrapped gifts to eight different care facilities, ensuring that many children experience a brighter holiday season.
The initiative stems from the Fire & Rescue Service’s desire to give back to the community after receiving substantial support from the public, businesses, and NGOs during the devastating fires of last summer. These donations were critical in keeping the firefighting teams sustained while they worked tirelessly to protect the city.
Chief fire officer’s call for Christmas cheer
Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Clinton Manuel expressed the gratitude of the Fire & Rescue Service, highlighting the vital role the community’s donations played during the fires. “While we cannot reach each person who supported us, we decided to give back to our communities in the form of a social outreach in recognition and thanks to the many donors from whom we receive support during our wildfire period,” Manuel said.
The Fire & Rescue Service had initially launched a call for members of the service to donate gifts for a Christmas Box campaign. The response was overwhelming, but it was when Pick n Pay stepped in to assist that the initiative really took off. The retailer’s support ensured that all the children’s Christmas wishes could be fulfilled.
A Festive Surprise Delivered by Fire Engines
Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, expressed his pride in the collaboration. “I am incredibly proud of this collaboration and what has been achieved. Santa may deliver in a sleigh on Christmas Eve, but our firefighters have just distributed gifts in their shiny red fire engines. This was cause for much excitement and delight, ensuring a festive and bright Christmas for many children in less fortunate circumstances,” Smith said.
The care homes receiving gifts this year include Heaven’s Nest in Ottery, Habibia Children’s Home in Rylands, Heartlands Baby Sanctuary in Somerset West, Little Angels Home in Somerset West, Luthando Orphanage and Child Care in Flamingo Vlei, Rainbow of Hope in Goodwood, South African Children’s Home in Gardens, and St George’s House in Wynberg.

As the Fire & Rescue Service continues to give back to the city that has supported them, they are ensuring that many children who might otherwise have a challenging Christmas are able to experience the joy of the season.
