A local fisherman, identified in reports as Jody Rademeyer, was shot in the head, neck and chest during an armed robbery at Monwabisi Beach between 1am and 2am on Tuesday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to the Daily Voice, he and a friend were at the beach when four armed men in a black VW Polo approached and robbed the friend, who was sitting in a red Toyota Corolla. Rademeyer tried to intervene and was shot before the suspects fled in the stolen car.
Captain F C van Wyk, a police spokesperson, confirmed Muizenberg police opened a docket into attempted murder and carjacking and that no arrests have been made so far.
‘We are investigating the circumstances and urge anyone with information to come forward,’ he told Cape Argus.
Members of the local fishing community expressed shock and fear after the attack. A representative of a fishing club said the incident underlined longstanding safety concerns, adding: ‘We have asked for patrols but nothing has been done.’
The club called for increased policing of beaches where anglers often fish at night (Son).
