Two children and three adults died when a driver lost control of their vehicle, and crashed into a tree in the ocean-side town of Kleinmond on Saturday evening.

According to Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa, the driver not only hit a tree, but an electric box and unoccupied vehicle that was parked on the Main Road as well. The motorist was reportedly driving from Hermanus when the crash took place.

“An adult female and two children aged nine and thirteen years old died,” he said in a statement. “Two men suffered serious injuries and passed away in the hospital.”

It is alleged that one of the children who died was celebrating their birthday at the time of the crash.
