Torrential rains have engulfed Cape Town in a series of catastrophic floods, with the Khayelitsha township bearing the brunt of this natural disaster, reports Cape {town} Etc.
With homes submerged under knee-deep water, countless pets face a dire situation, stranded and vulnerable amid the chaos of the storm.
The prevailing distress paints a picture of sheer desperation, as families struggle to protect their beloved animals from the relentless elements that have transformed their community into a watery grave.
The Mdzananda Animal Clinic, a cornerstone of animal welfare in Khayelitsha, has launched an urgent response to rescue and care for the affected animals.
Their dedicated field team works tirelessly, wading through flooded streets and debris to locate and assist pets in distress.
Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Mdzananda, reports: ‘We’ve found dogs chained in the rain, cats soaked and hiding under rubble, and families doing their best to protect their beloved pets with the little they have. It’s heartbreaking, and we need urgent support to keep going.’
Recognising the gravity of the situation, the clinic has issued a heartfelt appeal for emergency donations.
Funds raised will be critical in enabling the continuation of their rescue and relief initiatives, which include:
- Emergency patrols to rescue animals in danger
- Warm blankets, food, and dog kennels for pets left out in the cold
- Immediate veterinary care for animals affected by the storm
- Education for pet owners on protecting animals during harsh winter conditions
Beyond rescuing animals, the Mdzananda team is also distributing essential food parcels, blankets, and kennels to assist pet owners struggling to provide for their furry companions during this devastating time.
‘We will continue patrolling during the storm and throughout the winter. We will not let any pet be forgotten,’ asserts du Plessis.
