Florida is set to become the first US state to remove all vaccine mandates, a move critics warn could lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases and undermine public health safeguards.
The plan was announced by Dr Joseph Ladapo, who described existing mandates as ‘immoral’ and an intrusion on personal rights.
The BBC noted that Ladapo likened vaccine requirements to ‘slavery’ during a press conference, emphasising individual and parental choice.
‘Who am I to tell you what your child should put in your body? I don’t have that right, your body is a gift from God,’ he added.
The proposal would eliminate requirements for vaccines against diseases such as measles, polio, chickenpox, and hepatitis B in schools and daycare facilities.
However, the timeline for implementation remains unclear, with some changes requiring legislative approval.
As per the MSN article, Ladapo stated that the effort would end ‘all of them. Every last one of them.’
The BBC added that the state health department can scrap some rules independently, while others would need action by Florida’s Republican-led legislature.
The announcement has been met with widespread criticism from medical and educational groups.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Florida Chapter warned that removing vaccines increases risks for students and staff, while the Florida Education Association stated the move could ‘disrupt student learning and make schools less safe.’
The World Health Organization estimated that vaccines have saved at least 154 million lives globally over the past 50 years, mostly infants and children. Reports cited the CDC’s finding that childhood vaccinations prevent about four million deaths worldwide annually.
Health experts, including Dr Debra Houry, former CDC chief medical officer, expressed concern that the policy change could lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases. She warned that unvaccinated children are at significantly higher risk of severe outcomes from illnesses like influenza.
‘Vaccines are really important to prevent kids from having these significant diseases,’ Houry emphasised.
Meanwhile, governors of Washington, Oregon and California have formed an alliance to safeguard health policies in response to the Trump administration’s restructuring of the CDC and appointment of vaccine skeptics.
This partnership aims to align immunization plans with recommendations from respected national medical organizations, reflecting a deepening divide between Republican and Democratic approaches to public health.
