Police found ‘two mag wheels recently taken from a nearby vehicle and an elephant tusk in the car and charged the three occupants with theft from a Muizenberg motor vehicle’, presumed stolen property, robbery and ‘contravention of the Nature and environmental conservation ordinance act 19 of 1974’, the provincial office said.
‘Information from patrols led us to the vehicle on Main Road,’ said Constable Ndakhe Gwala. ‘Our members acted swiftly and arrested the suspects without further risk to members of the public.’
A social media post shared by the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum showed footage of the chase from another vantage point. See video here and POV footage here.
According to the Strandfontein CPF, the suspects were pursued along Welgelegen Road and Spine Road before being stopped.
Constable Gwala added that ‘the matter will be dealt with in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court once charges are processed.’
The provincial police statement noted the car had links to a robbery in Claremont and a previous theft in Wynberg. Property recovered will form part of the ongoing enquiry.
The combined vigilance of the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum and operational response from the Western Cape Flying Squad underlines how coordinated efforts can strengthen public safety across local communities.
