Die Antwoord has once again found themselves in the news, but for all the wrong reasons. According to reports, a woman tasked with caring for the duo’s foster kids has revealed that she witnessed years of exploitation and child neglect.
In a damning interview by Ben Jay Crossman (Die Antwoord’s ‘secret artist’) released back in April, Gabriel “Tokkie” du Preez, the adopted son of the duo Waddy Jones (Ninja) and Anri du Toit (Yolandi), shared his experience of being “raised” by Die Antwoord.
The former au pair, who spoke to News24 under anonymity, has corroborated “Tokkie’s allegations, and claimed that the group would often refer to their foster children as the “orphan kids.”
The woman alleges that she started working for Die Antwoord back in 2014 after Ninja reportedly propositioned her and her partner to be his “girlfriends.” After declining his offer, they were then offered jobs as assistants, tasked with helping out with the kids when necessary.
Along with Tokkie, the musicians also fostered his younger sister and another boy from Fietas in Vrededorp, Johannesburg. The pair also have a 17-year-old biological daughter, named Sixteen.
Here are just a few of the allegations being hurled at Die Antwoord by their former au pair:
- Tokkie was reportedly encouraged to make prank calls and swear at people on the other end.
- He was indoctrinated to believe that he was the devil and that he could “burn people in hell.”
- The children were exposed to alcohol and drugs as Die Antwoord would throw huge parties, often for content.
- They would leave the kids with her for extended periods of time.
Speaking to the publication, she went on to reveal that the music duo also took advantage of her, leaving her “burnt out” and suffering a breakdown. She also claimed that they refused to pay her after she took some time off during the festive season to spend time with her family, after which she quit.
Since Tokkie’s heartbreaking revelations to Crossman, Die Antwoord have released a statement via their social media.
“With fame comes stalkers, Die Antwoord’s number 1 stalker being a man called Ben Crossman, an ex-South African currently living in France,” the statement read.
They have gone on to claim that the interview has been nothing more than a carefully “orchestrated” campaign to place Die Antwoord in a terrible light.
