Football fans around the world are sending their best wishes to Carlos Alberto Parreira after the legendary coach was admitted to intensive care in Rio de Janeiro.
The 83-year-old former Brazil and South Africa head coach was taken to hospital on Wednesday after developing a lung infection and is currently receiving respiratory support, as per ESPN.
Doctors treating Parreira confirmed that he remains in a stable condition, although he requires close medical monitoring in the intensive care unit.
The football icon has faced health challenges in recent years, having been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2023.
Despite his current battle, Parreira’s legacy in international football remains firmly established. He is widely recognised as one of the most experienced coaches in World Cup history and holds the unique record of managing six different national teams at the global tournament.
His greatest success came in 1994, when he guided the Brazil national football team to World Cup glory in the United States.
That triumph delivered Brazil’s fourth World Cup title and cemented Parreira’s place among the most respected coaches in the sport.
Parreira’s career, however, stretched far beyond his achievements with Brazil. He also led Kuwait at the 1982 World Cup, the United Arab Emirates in 1990, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and South Africa at the 2010 tournament.
His connection with South African football remains especially strong. Parreira became a familiar figure during Bafana Bafana’s preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, when South Africa hosted the tournament for the first time.
During his time in charge of Bafana Bafana, Parreira helped prepare the national team for one of the biggest sporting moments in the country’s history.
Although South Africa did not progress beyond the group stage in 2010, Parreira’s calm approach, experience and knowledge of international football earned him widespread respect among supporters.
Beyond tactics and results, Parreira has often been remembered as a coach who brought professionalism and global experience to every team he managed.
As news of his hospitalisation spreads, tributes have poured in for a figure whose influence has reached generations of footballers and fans.
For now, the football world will be hoping the Brazilian legend makes a strong recovery from his latest health setback.
