A former Cape Town attorney has been ordered by the Bellville Serious Commercial Crimes Court to repay more than R62 800 that he allegedly stole from his clients who were meant to benefit from the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
According to reports, the order was made against the owner of Bauman Attorneys, Brian Albertus Bauman who was already sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in 2020 for defrauding his clients with RAF claims.
At the time of Bauman’s sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority’s Eric Ntabazalila indicated that Bauman confessed that he received more than R24.4 million in RAF claims but only paid out R6.7 million, pocketing the rest, IOL reported.
However, according to Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani, Bauman who specialised in RAF claim, stole R14.8 million to allegedly support his gambling addiction.
Hani said the court now ordered that the money be paid into the Criminal Asset Recovery Account belonging to the State in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
She went on to say that not only did Bauman defraud his clients but was also further struck off from the roll of attorneys in South Africa.
