A former South African and ANC Deputy President, David Mabuza, passed away on Thursday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to reports, Mabuza had been battling health issues in recent times, a struggle that has now culminated in his passing.
Fikile Mbalula, the Secretary-General of the ANC, expressed deep sorrow over Mabuza’s death, stating in a public statement, ‘It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we learn of the passing of former Deputy President of the Republic and stalwart of our movement, David Dabede Mabuza.’
Mbalula highlighted Mabuza’s unwavering dedication to the service of the people of South Africa, referencing his enduring commitment to the values of unity, discipline and transformation that characterised his career.
Born in Mpumalanga, Mabuza’s political journey began early in the fight against apartheid, establishing him as a key figure in the struggle for liberation.
He rose through the ranks of the ANC, eventually serving as the Premier of Mpumalanga and later being appointed Deputy President of South Africa, a position he held from 2018 until 2022.
Throughout his career, Mabuza earned both allies and critics, yet his impact on the ANC and the nation cannot be overstated.
Apart from his political duties, he was recognised for his ability to navigate complex political waters and his commitment to advancing the ideals of the party he loved.
In tribute, Mbalula remarked, ‘On behalf of the African National Congress, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, comrades, and the people of South Africa. We have lost a patriot, a freedom fighter, and a leader who served with humility and conviction.’
As South Africa mourns the loss of Mabuza, a call to honour his legacy resonates. Mbalula concluded with a poignant message urging the nation to continue working towards building ‘a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and prosperous South Africa’.
