Former Miss South Africa and Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, took to Instagram this weekend to share the heartbreaking news that her younger sister has passed away.

Her teenaged sister had been fighting subtotal cerebellar agenesis, a rare condition that left her without a cerebellum, since birth.

Nel-Peters’ emotional Instagram post conveyed deep sadness, although she expressed feeling comfort in the knowledge that her sister has been relieved of the battle.

“My little Princess, Angel on Earth, biggest joy and baby sister, Franje, passed away earlier today. Our hearts are aching beyond measure but I am grateful knowing she’s forever relieved of the pain she experienced on earth. She’s laughing, running and playing in heaven just like we always hoped she would on earth . She’s free ! Thank you for all your prayers, love and support. Lief jou vir altyd my Sussa en eendag sal ons weer bymekaar wees!” said Nel-Peters.

The message was accompanied by three pictures, one of which was a quote from the Bible reading, “You are loved forever.”
