Businesses and motorists in Cape Town’s CBD are being advised to plan ahead on Tuesday afternoon as several roads around City Hall will be partially and fully closed to accommodate a City of Cape Town-hosted event, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The ‘Freedom of the City’ event will take place between 5pm and 7pm at Cape Town City Hall on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, with traffic disruptions expected in the surrounding precinct throughout the day.
According to the City’s notice, there will be ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ signs erected in and around the City Hall from 5am to 5:30pm on affected routes, while partial road closures will be implemented in the City Hall precinct.
Motorists can expect full road closures from 2pm to 6pm on:
- Corporation Street, between Darling and Longmarket streets
- Parade Street, between Darling and Longmarket streets
Additional roads impacted by the event include Plein Street, Darling Street, Corporation Street and Parade Street.
The City has assured the public that local access to businesses and parking garages will be permitted, despite the closures.
Road users are urged to allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes where possible, particularly during the afternoon peak period.
