Cape Town’s biodiversity takes centre stage once again as the FynbosLIFE Fair prepares to ignite curiosity and awareness around the ecological importance of fire in the Cape Floristic Region this weekend.
This year’s fair focuses on fire, described as ‘a vital, natural part of fynbos ecology that requires careful management.’
The event will feature expert talks and interactive demonstrations from organisations such as the SPCA Wildlife Unit, Working With Fire, Cape Town Fire Department, and the Volunteer Wildfire Services, each sharing strategies for responsible fire management, prevention, and ecological restoration.
Dr. Glynis Humphrey, who is a a Ph.D. in Fire Ecology, will share her experience from across Africa, exploring how the ecological necessity of fire and the imperative for judicious management help sustain biodiversity and prevent uncontrolled wildfires.
Highlighting the significance of Cape Town’s natural heritage, Dr. Caitlin von Witt, botanical ecologist and director of FynbosLIFE, explains: ‘Cape Town is considered both the biodiversity and extinction capital of the world, within a buzzing Cape Floristic Region (CFR) biodiversity hotspot.’
She added that the volunteer-run event aims to ‘give fynbos its place in the sun’ by celebrating its beauty, diversity, and conservation value.
‘Found only in the CFR, the Fynbos Biome is globally renowned for its exceptional plant species richness and endemicity. We want to showcase this and all things fynbos at the FynbosLIFE Fair.’
Visitors can expect a variety of stalls featuring fynbos-inspired art, crafts, homeware, and botanically infused gin, beer, and food, along with educational talks on fynbos propagation and restoration.
‘Visitors can also enjoy a fanfare of fynbos-inspired artwork, ceramics, fabrics, and homeware; fynbos-distilled or -infused gin, beer and rum, honey, food featuring fynbos, and much more,’ Event organiser Genie Vittu stated.
The fair also includes a FUNbos play area for children, complete with fire safety demonstrations and environmentally themed activities hosted by Sharkspotters, Dale Snyder’s Reptile Show, and others.
Adding a creative touch, local Lego designer SuperstofBricks will showcase his Fynbos Flowers set, which has gained more than 10,000 supporters on Lego Ideas and is currently under review by the Lego Group for possible commercial release.
This year also welcomes Friends of Groups, which is the Lepidopterists’ Society of Africa, the Entomological Society of Southern Africa, Cape Leopard Trust, and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, alongside live music from Kola Aka Vinyl Destination and MC Mark Mwaba, both from Muizenberg, ensuring a festive atmosphere.
The fair ties into FynbosLIFE’s broader mission, including the creation of eight Veld Circles across Cape Town since 2018. These circles, located in areas such as Constantia, Muizenberg, Plumstead, and Tamboerskloof, highlight the diversity of fynbos vegetation unique to each region.
