Leaders at the Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg, adopted a declaration on Saturday that underscored global challenges without the involvement of the United States.
This significant declaration, which is being described by one White House official as shameful, signifies both a triumph for global cooperation and a source of tension within international relations.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the host of the summit, confirmed that there was overwhelming support for the declaration among participating nations.
‘There’s been overwhelming consensus and agreement that one of the other tasks we should undertake right at the beginning is to … adopt our declaration,’ Ramaphosa said as per reports by Reuters.
The declaration, drafted by G20 envoys over a year of negotiations, reflects a collective commitment to combat the climate crisis.

Notably, it adopts language that has long been opposed by the Trump administration, specifically concerning the acknowledgment of climate change and the promotion of ambitious renewable energy targets.
This move serves as a direct rebuke to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly questioned the scientific consensus surrounding global warming and sought to downplay its implications.
Sources familiar with the matters revealed that U.S. officials were excluded from the drafting process, a situation that has only exacerbated the relationship between Pretoria and Washington.
The declaration also addressed the critical issue of debt service burdens faced by poorer nations, further asserting the need for collaborative global solutions.
Despite the absence of U.S. input, Ramaphosa emphasised the constructive spirit of cooperation displayed by the other leaders. He expressed gratitude to all delegations that worked in good faith towards producing what many believe to be a monumental document for the first G20 presidency held on African soil.
‘We should not allow anything to diminish the value, the stature and the impact of the first African G20 presidency,’ Ramaphosa stressed as quoted on Reuters.
The backdrop to the summit has not been without controversy. Trump’s refusal to attend, stemming from unsubstantiated allegations regarding the host country’s treatment of its white minority, has sparked criticism both domestically and internationally.
