Chaos erupted in Mitchells Plain when a series of shooting incidents left five individuals dead and seven others injured in a chilling sequence of events on Thursday afternoon, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The violence, linked to ongoing gang activity, has triggered a manhunt as Western Cape police seek to apprehend those responsible.
The first shooting occurred around 12:30pm within a tuck-shop in Beacon Valley, where gunfire resulted in the tragic deaths of two people, while three others sustained injuries.
Shortly thereafter, another shooting incident in a separate tuck-shop nearby mirrored this tragedy, claiming one additional life and injuring three others.
A third victim was reported wounded in a separate shooting within the same vicinity, highlighting the dangerous escalation of violence.
The unsettling spree did not end there, as two further shootings were recorded in the areas of Tafelsig and Town Centre, resulting in one fatality each.
The overall scenes of devastation underline a growing concern regarding rampant gang-related violence in the region.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa, authorities have opened murder and attempted murder cases in response to the incidents, and the Anti-Gang Unit has assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation.
‘All incidents are believed to be gang related,’ said Potelwa, emphasising the alarming trend of violence that seems to reign over Mitchells Plain.
In efforts to curb the violence, police have bolstered multidisciplinary deployments throughout the area, strategically positioned to prevent further occurrences as the manhunt for the suspects continues.
