Garden Route SPCA battles to rescue wildlife amid relentless wildfires

As the flames continue to wreak havoc across the Mossel Bay and Tsitsikama areas, the Garden Route SPCA has mobilised teams to scour the burned landscapes in a desperate search for survivors.

With wildfires raging since early this week, there is growing concern for the vulnerable creatures who were unable to flee the inferno, reports Cape {town} Etc.

‘Our greatest concern is for those who could not outrun the flames small, silent creatures like tortoises. Yesterday (Wednesday), we rescued several live tortoises from the ashes. Each one mattered,’ Garden Route SPCA stated.

Reports of antelope fleeing as the fire advanced underline the heartbreaking nature of these incidents. The SPCA teams have proactively cut fences in areas where wildlife might escape to avoid the smoke and flames that threaten their lives

On Thursday teams returned to the affected regions to look for injured animals in need of care and compassion.

Unfortunately, as the situation stands, many of the injuries encountered are severe, forcing rescuers to confront the tragic reality of humane euthanasia for those whose suffering cannot be alleviated. ‘When recovery is not possible, our role becomes one of mercy to prevent further suffering,’ the SPCA lamented.

Compounding the challenges faced by the SPCA, late Thursday, the fire dangerously approached the Sonskyn Vallei area, a notably vulnerable community already facing numerous hardships.

‘While the situation is currently stable, the risk has not passed. Conditions can change quickly, and there remains concern that the fire could return. Our thoughts are with the residents of Sonskyn Vallei, many of whom already face significant challenges. Fires like this threaten not only homes but also animals and livelihoods,’ the SPCA stated.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Garden Route SPCA is urgently seeking support from the community. Specific needs include:

• Fuel to keep vehicles operational
• Replacement boots for inspectors whose footwear was damaged while traversing harsh terrains
• Medical supplies for burn treatment and humane euthanasia
• Funds to support emergency veterinary care and ongoing field operations
