From tourism to the restaurant industry, COVID-19 has had a devastating effect across the board. But, one industry appears to be coming out on top … reaching its climax, if you will.
The sex toy industry has apparently seen a rise in sales despite a devastating hard lockdown. Speaking to IOL, the owner of Allure Sensuality Emporium, Sari Cohen, stated that curious couples had been flooding her emails as they looked for new ways to keep the spark alive while being locked together at home.
While non-essential shops such as Cohen’s couldn’t deliver during the tight Level 5 restrictions, things took an interesting turn once these restrictions were lifted, as couples and singles clamoured to purchase their desired sex toy.
While couples sought pleasure at home together, those without a significant other contemplated the dangers of a pandemic, choosing to avoid dabbling in the occasional sexual partner and turning to self-pleasure instead.
“I think in general we saw positive approach and more curiosity toward sex toys and understanding of pleasure and sexual needs,” said Cohen.
Curfew and more time at home apparently equal more experimental sex, says George Masche of Passion Fruit.
“I guess we are one of the few lucky industries that saw an increase in business during the pandemic but on the flip side we also have some new challenges to deal with like for example major international shipping backlogs or unpredictable fluctuation of currency,” he said.
