Golden Arrow and the Western Cape Government have joined forces by launching a pop-up vaccination site at the Arrowgate Depot in Montana, Cape Town reports News24.
The initiative forms part of October transport month and the Western Cape Government’s vaccination drive.
With approximately 250 000 passengers travelling via Golden Arrow transports on a daily basis, the vaccination drive saw bus drivers and various other Golden Arrow workers queue for their free jab on Monday, October 25.
MEC of transport and public works, Daylin Mitchell, and Western Cape Health MEC, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, attended the launch of the pop-up site, reports IOL.
Mbombo thanked workers for taking the vaccine and for attempting to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
“We can ensure that we don’t experience a severe fourth wave but we need to take our vaccines. To everyone here today in the transport sector, we know that you are exposed as you work with many people every day. Thank you for taking your vaccines,” he stated.
The third wave had a major impact on South Africans aged 50 and older, who made up 30% of COVID-19 cases and included 60% of admissions, and 83% of deaths.
Mbombo further urged workers in this age range to get their jab ahead of the busy festive season.
“While we start to vaccinate our children, we still need to vaccinate many elderly residents. There are many people, who are 50 years and older, who still need to get vaccinated. I urge you, and all residents in this age band, to visit their nearest vaccination site to get their jabs.”
Golden Arrow has stated that around 75% of its staff have already been vaccinated, but it would like to provide the platform for all of its staff to be vaccinated.
