Eyewitness accounts detailed the desperate scene at about 3:13pm, as a 34-year-old man was spotted waving for help while caught in a rip current just offshore.
In an extraordinary display of courage, a local Good Samaritan and offshore commercial diver, immediately sprang into action.
With his partner swiftly raising the alarm to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), he ventured into the perilous waters, equipped only with fins to aid his swimming.
NSRI Wilderness station commander, Jonathan Britton, outlined the rapid response that ensued: ‘NSRI rescue swimmers and George Fire and Rescue Services were alerted, while our crew prepared to launch the NSRI rescue craft V’s Rescuer at the Herolds Bay community satellite station,’ Simultaneously, Western Cape Government Health EMS were also activated to lend assistance.

As the NSRI teams raced towards the scene, the determined partner of the Good Samaritan remained in contact, providing real-time updates to the rescuers about the unfolding situation.
Fortunately, the diver reached the distressed man, who was lying on his back in the surf zone, employing an instinctive method to conserve energy while grappling with the sea swells.
With remarkable teamwork, the two men were able to navigate their way back to the safety of the beach, just moments before the NSRI arrived.
Upon assessment, NSRI medics confirmed that the 34-year-old man miraculously sustained no injuries and did not require further medical assistance.
Both the rescuer and the rescued have since requested privacy regarding the incident. Britton stated, ‘NSRI commends the Good Samaritan for his quick and brave actions that undoubtedly saved a life, as well as his partner for her quick thinking in raising the alarm.’
