A routine-looking drive into work allegedly turned into a major criminal investigation on Wednesday morning after a 47-year-old prison warden was arrested at Goodwood Prison with a large quantity of drugs and other prohibited items in his vehicle.
The operation began at about 6.40am, as staff and vehicles were being checked at the prison.
According to Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, officers stopped and searched the warden’s vehicle.
What they allegedly discovered raised immediate concerns about how contraband could enter a correctional facility.

Police seize drugs worth an estimated R65,000
Police allegedly recovered 600 Mandrax tablets, 100g of tik and 300g of dagga from the vehicle.
Van Wyk said the combined estimated value of the drugs was around R65,000.
But the alleged drug haul was only part of what officers found.
The search also reportedly uncovered 23 cellular phones, three pairs of earbuds and five USB memory sticks.
Police further found 10 condoms and 60 libido tablets inside the vehicle.
The range of items allegedly recovered has placed renewed attention on the challenge of preventing unauthorised goods from entering correctional facilities.
Warden detained at Goodwood police station
Following the search, the suspect was arrested and taken into custody at Goodwood police station.
He is expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court once he has been formally charged.
The allegations have not yet been tested in court, and the accused remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
