The iconic GrandWest in Cape Town is set to undergo a significant transformation with the announcement of a new shopping mall, which will enhance its already vibrant entertainment precinct, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The leading developer Flanagan & Gerard unveiled plans for the R600 million GrandWest Mall, a project that promises to add around 60 retail outlets directly connected to the casino complex.
Construction of the 22 000m² shopping centre is slated to commence in September 2025, with an anticipated opening in March 2027. The mall aims to elevate the comprehensive leisure and retail offerings at GrandWest, introducing a community-focused hub that combines various shopping options with an unparalleled entertainment experience.
MD of Flanagan & Gerard, Paul Gerard, said that their demographic research shows there is a very real need to create a retail centre that answers the everyday shopping needs in this community.
‘GrandWest Mall is being carefully designed to satisfy its immediate market and regional entertainment customers. We are thrilled to be working with Sun International again and to create the ultimate shopping experience at GrandWest.’

With an investment of approximately R600 million earmarked for this venture, the mall is set to become a cornerstone for community engagement. Plans feature two major supermarket anchors and two pharmacies, alongside a diverse selection of fashion boutiques, athleisure, services, health and beauty options, banking facilities, and new dining establishments.
This comprehensive strategy reflects a commitment to providing a dynamic shopping experience tailored to the local community’s needs.
Gerard noted that this development marks Flanagan & Gerard Property Group’s second collaboration with Sun International, following their successful R700 million retail and leisure expansion at the Sun Boardwalk Casino complex in Nelson Mandela Bay, which opened its 24 000m² Boardwalk Mall in September 2022.
He remarked, ‘GrandWest Mall is similar in concept and scale to Boardwalk Mall; however, it will feature more upmarket finishes, given its integration with Sun International’s largest gaming complex and the only casino in the Cape Town metro.’
GrandWest’s General Manager, Mervyn Naidoo, announced that the company has invested in the area, funding projects like Jakes Gerwel Drive upgrade. However, the area has always lacked a retail centre.
With a 24/7 operation attracting over 16 000 visitors daily, GrandWest is now offering a high-end GrandWest Mall shopping experience to the surrounding communities.
