Residents in the southern suburbs will have another reason to mark their calendars this week, as the much-loved Grassy Park Festive Market prepares to make its return for a two-day run at the Grassy Park Civic Centre.
The event, coordinated through the City’s Economic Growth Directorate and supported by Ward Councillor Donovan Nelson, builds on the growing popularity of community markets across Cape Town.
With the holiday season approaching, organisers say the market aims to create an accessible space where families can unwind and local vendors can showcase their creativity and products.
According to City of Cape Town, the market will run on:
-
Friday, 12 December from 5pm to 10pm
-
Saturday, 13 December from 10am to 3pm
The venue is in the Grassy Park Civic Centre, located on Market Street.
City representatives highlighted that vendors have been handpicked to ensure a wide variety of goods, ranging from festive treats and handmade crafts to toys and gift items.
A children’s play area and an entertainment schedule are also included to round out the experience.
Alderman James Vos, who is the Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, emphasised the broader purpose behind the festive markets taking shape across Cape Town.
‘The Grassy Park Festive Market is one of several community festivals and markets across Cape Town that showcase Cape Town’s talent, be it the crafters, the caterers, the designers and the performers. I hope that residents can come out in numbers to support these small businesses and artists,’ as he put it.
He added that the festive market is designed to be both an enjoyable outing and an economic platform.
‘The market is the perfect family-friendly time to get into the holiday spirit and support local small businesses. As a City, we host these markets to give vendors a platform to showcase their products and create valuable economic opportunities,’ he said.
With two days of food, crafts, music, and family activities on offer, the Grassy Park Festive Market is poised to bring holiday energy to the neighbourhood once again.
For small businesses and community artists, it provides a welcome stage; for families, it offers a relaxed festive outing as the year winds down.
