Cape Town’s world-famous Minstrel Parade could look very different in 2026, with organisers proposing a fresh route that would shift the spectacle to Green Point, although the final decision is still awaiting approval.
The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) has submitted an application to the City of Cape Town’s Events Permit Office to reroute the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade on Monday, 5 January 2026. While preparations are progressing, organisers admit that outstanding logistical and technical hurdles must still be resolved before the plan is confirmed, as per TimeOut.
The KKKA has pointed to recent technical challenges within event processes as a cause of delays, stressing that these systems are being refined to ensure fairness, accessibility and protection against misuse. Organisers say this work should be completed within days and have asked the public and participants for patience.
If the green light is given, the parade would be staged entirely in Green Point, using an established event corridor already familiar to large-scale celebrations such as the Cape Town Carnival. Under the proposal, about 20 000 performers would assemble in Chiappini Street before moving along the fan walk via Somerset Road and ending at DHL Stadium.
The planned route stretches roughly 1.2km, allowing troupes to perform continuously for crowds lining the way. The parade is expected to begin at 11am, with the final troupe entering the performance corridor at around 5pm. Celebrations would then shift inside DHL Stadium, where the first day of KKKA competitions would continue until 10pm.
Entry prices for the stadium on opening day are set at R100 for adults, R60 for pensioners, R60 for children aged two to six, and free access for children under two.
In a message shared online, organisers said: ‘Please be patient while we ensure that the service we share with you is working, fair and accessible to all. Remember, the stadium is big enough for everyone. Thank you for your loyal support and for encouraging us to always be better.’
Should the route be approved, motorists can expect significant traffic disruptions in Green Point between 6am and 9pm on the day. Roads likely to be affected include Somerset Road, Green Point Main Road, Prestwich Street, Chiappini Street, Ebenezer Road and Waterkant Street. Access would be limited to residents, permit holders, hotel guests and staff.
No parking will be allowed on side streets in the area, with illegally parked vehicles subject to towing. Free public parking is expected at P9 and P10 on Bill Peters Drive, while paid parking will be available at the V&A Waterfront, including underground and open-air facilities.
The Minstrel Carnival, which dates back more than 100 years, has deep roots in the history of Cape Town’s formerly enslaved communities. What began as a celebration of the first day off after New Year’s Day has grown into a vibrant display of music, costume and cultural expression.
Beyond the parade itself, the carnival is driven by intense competition that continues long after Tweede Nuwe Jaar. In 2026, additional judged events will take place at Athlone Stadium on 10, 24 and 31 January, and 7 February, extending the festivities well into the new year.
