The incident occurred when police members attached to the AGU conducted density patrols in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain around 5:52pm.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed to Cape {town} Etc that they became suspicious while searching a suspect who wore an ‘uncommon waistband’.
‘The members interrogated the suspect and accompanied the man to his home in Theresa Street where they searched the inner and outer perimeters which resulted in the discovery of an explosive device.’
The provincial explosives unit stepped in and removed the device, which was identified as a training grenade. ‘The device, which was found abandoned, [was] removed for safekeeping. Mitchells Plain police registered an enquiry.’
Veranique Williams of the Community Police Forum told Daily Voice that children alerted a neighbourhood watch member who tipped the police off.
She added that the community was frightened because the device could have exploded. ‘The community is very worried because where did they get it and what else is still in Tafelsig (?) The gangs are fighting almost every day like cowboys and crooks.’
Anyone with information or who saw someone in possession of the device should call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
