This weekend, 41 dedicated runners from the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust (GSHT) will hit the streets of Cape Town for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, aiming to raise funds for a critical cause: equipping Groote Schuur Hospital’s new Emergency Centre with essential life-saving tools, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The team includes frontline staff from the hospital’s Trauma and Emergency Units, alongside colleagues from the Radiography Department, all running to support the patients they care for daily. Their effort reflects the hospital’s commitment to excellence, resilience, and compassionate public healthcare.
Adding further weight to the campaign, Groote Schuur Hospital CEO Dr Shaheem de Vries, Facility Board Chair Hassen Kajie, and GSHT Executive Director Kristy Evans will also be lacing up to show solidarity. Their participation highlights the urgent need to ensure the Emergency Centre, set to open in 2026, is fully equipped from day one.

The centre, a collaboration between Groote Schuur Hospital and the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, will act as a major hub for emergency and trauma care in the province. The fundraising target is R20 million, which will go towards vital equipment such as ventilators, patient monitors, and ultrasound machines, critical tools that enable doctors and nurses to provide immediate life-saving care.
‘Our Emergency Centre is the first point of care for thousands of people every year,’ said Kristy Evans. ‘With the right equipment, our teams can save more lives, faster.’
Dr Shaheem de Vries added: ‘Delivering quality emergency care in a public health system requires more than dedication, it demands the right tools and equipment. Our staff bring extraordinary commitment every day, and this campaign helps ensure they have the resources to match their skill and compassion. Every contribution directly supports better care for every patient who comes through our doors.’
The Groote Schuur Hospital Trust is calling on the public to contribute to the campaign and help spread the word. Every donation, no matter the size, will bring the hospital closer to fully equipping its new Emergency Centre and strengthening public healthcare across the Western Cape.
