Update: 27 February, 4:21pm
The fire that broke out in Signal Hill, near Bo-Kaap earlier today has been largely contained, with only light smoke still visible over parts of the area, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Emergency crews remain on site, but community leaders say the immediate danger has eased. Bo-Kaap Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Ebrahim ‘Billy’ Christians confirmed the situation had stabilised, as per Cape Town news.
‘The fire is almost contained; only a small amount of smoke remains,’ he said.
The update comes just hours before the annual Boeka Innie Bo-Kaap mass iftar, scheduled for 5pm, a key gathering during Ramadan that draws residents and visitors into the historic neighbourhood.
The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service deployed significant resources to contain the blaze. Four fire engines, one water tanker and two wildland firefighting teams were dispatched to the scene.
Spokesperson Mark Bosch indicated that strong winds had been fanning the flames, complicating suppression efforts and requiring sustained coordination on the ground.
To manage operations, an Incident Command Team was activated to oversee strategy and ensure resources were deployed effectively.
Despite the windy conditions, crews worked to prevent further spread, focusing on containment lines and protecting surrounding structures.
With the situation stabilising, residents have been encouraged to proceed with preparations for Boeka Innie Bo-Kaap.
Organisers indicated that the remaining smoke is not expected to interfere with the mass iftar gathering later this evening.
A fire has just broken out above the Noon Gun area on Signal Hill, shortly after 12pm on Friday, 27 February, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) Management confirmed that it has dispatched ground firefighting crews.
Updates to follow.
