A 35-year-old man was arrested by the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) on Friday,21 January after he was caught with a substantial amount of drugs on the N1 near Beaufort West.
According to the Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani, the suspect’s arrest comes after SANEB officers along with the Beaufort West K9 unit and the Beaufort West Flying Squad stopped a white truck during a vehicle checkpoint on the N1 highway, travelling from Johannesburg destined for Cape Town.
“Two brown boxes containing 20 000 suspected mandrax tablets were found and seized for further investigation,” Hani said.
Hani went on to say that the suspect is due in the Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 January on charges of dealing in illicit drugs worth an estimated street value of R1, 2 Million.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, police officers arrested a 31-year-old man in Kwazakhele Street in Wesbank after he was caught with a 9mm pistol with ammunition. Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi indicated that the suspect is expected to appear in Goodwood Magistrates Court.
