This past Saturday, December 27th, a tragic incident unfolded that highlights the dire need for action against animal cruelty within our community.
An emaciated pony cruelly tethered to the front gate of a local facility was discovered, embodying the heartbreaking consequences of gross neglect and abandonment.
The pony was found clinging to life, his frail body a testament to the suffering he had endured for far too long.
The pony remained supported only by a short length of rope tied around his neck, attached to the facility’s front gate.
Thankfully, one of the facility’s nurses, Michelle Hennings, who has considerable experience with equines, quickly stepped in to assess the pony’s immediate needs.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, she enlisted the help of a private equine veterinarian to provide care for the animal.

Despite their best efforts to save his life, the little pony succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning, leaving the staff devastated.
‘We were just discussing what to name the pony yesterday, and now we are preparing for his burial. It seems so unfair and such a waste of life,’ lamented Allan Perrins, spokesperson for Animal Welfare South Africa (AWS SA).
‘This pony was skeletal; his ribs and scarred hip bones were protruding. His right eye socket had been ground down from thrashing around in pain. There is no doubt he had been subjected to the most abhorrent neglect imaginable.’
The circumstances surrounding this abandonment lead the facility to suspect that the pony may have belonged to someone living nearby, as they are currently reviewing CCTV footage in hopes of identifying those responsible for such callous cruelty.
‘How and why anyone could be so indifferent defies logic. Abandoning him to suffer at our front gate speaks to the callousness of his indifferent owner, and we will ensure that they are swiftly brought to book,’ Perrins asserted.
