Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance, Helen Zille and her husband were in for a surprise when they went out for dinner on Wednesday, March 10.

The couple celebrated Helen’s 70th birthday at the Cellars-Hohenort Hotel when an oak tree fell down due to the strong winds that blasted Cape Town on Wednesday.

“While my husband and I were having dinner at the venue where we got married, the wind brought this 300 year old oak tree crashing down,” she wrote on Facebook.

“Fortunately no-one was in its direct path. Adventurous celebration.”

Helen’s supporters were quick to comment in good humour:

“You always know how to bring the House down!” one Facebook user said.

“When hubby says he was tree-ting you, you should have chosen one of their other branches,” another added. The comments kept coming: “Your bark is worse than your bite!”

And our favourite: “Seems you can still make the earth move for each other.”
