The Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) is currently investigating a dramatic high-speed chase that went horribly wrong after the fleeing driver reportedly swallowed a white powder, as per News24.
On 21 January, a high-speed chase ensued between Piketberg SAPS and a 40-year-old man from Constantia after officers spotted a vehicle that had been reported missing by the owner who hails from Kirstenhof, Cape Town.
After approaching the bakkie, the driver sped off with officers hot on his tail, chasing him down on the N7. The flying squad was called to assist, but the driver failed to stop.
Despite shooting at the tyres of the car, the dramatic chase continued to the centre of Cape Town, but the driver was forced to stop as the car was driving on rims, reports IOL.
IPID spokesperson Grace Langa said the officers reported that, after cornering the man, he swallowed the white powder.
“Police approached the driver and as they opened the door they noticed that in his hand he had about seven small containers with white powder inside and he quickly put the powder in his mouth.
“He was grabbed and put on the ground and tied with cable ties. While on the ground, white foam came out of his mouth and blood from his nose. Medical assistance was called and they tried to resuscitate him but he was declared dead. There were no visible injuries on the body.”
Paramedics were reportedly too late and the man died on the scene.
