A morning hike on one of Cape Town’s most popular trails ended in tragedy today, after a hiker fell from a section of the Lion’s Head route within Table Mountain National Park.
Information from SANParks via a Facebook post indicates that the incident occurred earlier in the morning, prompting an immediate multi-agency response.
Rescue teams worked under challenging conditions along the mountain’s rugged slopes in an attempt to reach the hiker as quickly as possible.
However, despite the combined efforts of those on scene, the individual succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased where they were found.
Responsibility for the matter has since been handed over to the South African Police Service, who are now leading the formal investigation.
Park authorities have confirmed that no further details about the deceased will be released at this stage, citing respect for the family’s privacy.
As noted by SANParks officials, the circumstances surrounding the fall will be assessed as part of the police investigation.
SANParks conveyed condolences to those affected by the incident.
The organisation also acknowledged the range of agencies and individuals who assisted during the response, thanking Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), SANParks rangers and the aerial support team, SkyMed Technical Rescue Team, civilians, fellow hikers and witnesses who provided statements, as well as SAPS for their swift response.
