In a heartbreaking tragic incident, a hiker collapsed while descending the iconic Lion’s Head trail on Friday night, prompting an emergency response from Wilderness Search and Rescue teams and other local authorities, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The rapid response to the incident involved multiple agencies, including the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics, SANParks – Table Mountain National Park rangers, and various technical rescue teams.
Despite their concerted efforts, the hiker, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, could not be revived. According to a statement from the rescue teams, unfortunately, all attempts to resuscitate the hiker were unsuccessful.
‘The incident was reported shortly before midnight, casting a pall over a popular destination known for its scenic views and vibrant hiking community.’
‘The hiker was subsequently carried from the trail and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and forensic services members who were present at the scene.’
‘The incident was officially concluded shortly before midnight, leaving behind a community in shock and mourning,’ WSAR said.
As news of the tragedy spreads, the Wilderness Search and Rescue team expressed their heartfelt condolences, stating, ‘We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.’ This incident serves as a sombre reminder of the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities, particularly in the rugged terrain that surrounds Cape Town.
Local authorities and rescue teams encourage hikers to always be prepared and to respect the mountain environment, which can be unforgiving. The trail at Lion’s Head, while popular, demands a level of caution, and safety should always be a priority.
