South Africans preparing for the busy end-of-year period will have more time to sort out travel and identification documents, as the Department of Home Affairs adds extra operating hours at selected offices, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The update, which was shared by the South African Government, forms part of a wider push to improve service accessibility during the festive season, a period when demand typically spikes.
From 8 to 19 December, and again from 5 to 16 January 2026, Home Affairs offices that handle Smart ID Cards and passports will remain open until 6pm, adding two hours to the standard operating schedule.
Officials state that the expanded hours are designed to support people needing to apply for or collect essential documents before year-end travel and family gatherings.
A statement from the department explains that the initiative aims to ‘deliver dignity for all,’ by ensuring that more people have access to identity and travel services when they need them most.
Residents planning to visit a branch are encouraged to secure a slot through the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) on the Home Affairs website.
While online bookings remain the preferred option, the department notes that walk-ins will still be assisted, giving flexibility to those who may not be able to schedule ahead.
The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber says the extended hours are part of a broader effort to ensure services remain accessible during peak periods.
‘We remain committed to providing accessible and people-centred services,’ he highlighted.
‘With our offices operating on extended hours ahead of and during the festive season, I encourage South Africans to make use of the longer opening hours to ensure that their essential documents are up to date, including travel documents.’
He added that the initiative will help people secure the necessary paperwork in time to enjoy the holidays and prepare for the New Year.
Dr Schreiber also acknowledged the officials working longer shifts to support the seasonal programme.
‘I salute the commitment of members who will be working longer hours to ensure that South Africans can enjoy their festive season with friends and family,’ he said.
He urged citizens who have already applied for Smart ID Cards or passports to collect them promptly, pointing to the department’s dedicated collection counters, another step in its broader service-improvement drive.
