A joint law enforcement operation in Hout Bay has led to the arrest of a 35-year-old man and the seizure of 1 800 West Coast Rock Lobster tails, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The operation was carried out after authorities received information about a vehicle allegedly transporting lobster tails near Harbour Road.
According to information posted by Voice of Cape Town Radio, officers searched the vehicle and discovered the large quantity of lobster tails.
Suspect arrested in Hout Bay
The 35-year-old suspect was arrested and taken into custody at Hout Bay SAPS.
The vehicle allegedly used to transport the lobster tails was also seized.
The operation brought together the City of Cape Town’s Marine and Environmental Law Enforcement Unit, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, and Animal Control officials.
Joint efforts target illegal marine trade
Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle the illegal harvesting, possession, transportation and trade of marine resources along the Cape coastline.
The seizure highlights the continued focus on suspected illegal activity involving West Coast Rock Lobster, with several law enforcement bodies working together during operations along the coast.
The investigation and legal process will now follow the suspect’s arrest and detention.
