NSRI Hout Bay rescue crew was launched after an urgent call from a local fishing vessel reporting a critically injured fisherman 35 nautical miles southwest of Hout Bay at 11:10am on Sunday, 19 October, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Spencer Oldham, NSRI Hout Bay station commander, said crews moved immediately to assist and coordinated with national and maritime agencies, including:
- The NSRI Emergency Operations Centre
- Telkom Maritime Radio Services
- Transnet National Ports Authority Port of Table Bay
- WC Government Health EMS Metro Control
- Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (nsri.org.za).
Two NSRI rescue craft, Nadine Gordimer and Albie Matthews, left harbour with an NSRI crew paramedic and additional rescue paramedics from Life Healthcare Response and WC Government Health EMS.
On arrival, teams boarded the fishing vessel in heavy sea conditions and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The crew escorted the vessel towards Hout Bay while rescue paramedics continued life-saving attempts.
A South African Air Force Lynx helicopter from AFB Ysterplaat was readied with an NSRI airborne sea rescue crew and an EMS paramedic to provide aerial support.
Paramedics continued extensive resuscitation efforts. When all attempts at reviving the man were exhausted, he was declared deceased on board.
The deceased is a 47-year-old man from Mossel Bay. His body was brought to Hout Bay Harbour, handed to the South African Police Service and taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
The NSRI conveyed condolences to the man’s family, friends and colleagues.
