The countdown is on for one of Cape Town’s most vibrant events, as the HSBC SVNS series returns to the Mother City for an electrifying two-day rugby and entertainment spectacle, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Set to take place on 7–8 December 2024 at DHL Stadium, the tournament promises action-packed matches, world-class entertainment, and a shot at a world record.
The Cape Town leg is the second stop in the HSBC SVNS series, which kicks off in Dubai and travels across six countries before concluding in Los Angeles in May 2025.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed his excitement about the event, which has become a highlight of the city’s festive season.
‘We are ready to welcome the world to the Cape Town leg of the HSBC SVNS series, which has been voted best live event in South Africa two years in a row,’ said Hill-Lewis. ‘Personally, I can tell you that this is one of the funnest events in the whole Cape Town events calendar. We invite rugby fans to come and enjoy themselves in the vibe and atmosphere of this tournament, and to explore all the wonderful things that Cape Town has to offer.’
Rugby meets entertainment
The HSBC SVNS tournament features the 12 top men’s and women’s sevens teams in the world, with non-stop matches over two thrilling days. In addition to cheering on the Olympic bronze medal-winning Blitzboks on home turf, fans will experience a weekend infused with music, colourful costumes, and lively entertainment.
SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer highlighted the unique atmosphere of the event.
‘The HSBC SVNS promises to be an unforgettable weekend experience, where rugby meets an electric and fun atmosphere packed with music, entertainment, and a full roster of games,’ said Oberholzer.
Adding to the excitement, Cape Town’s Street Stylers, two-time world hip-hop champions, are leading an attempt to break the world record for the largest-ever group Amapiano dance-off during a rugby match. Fans are invited to join the festivities, with dance workshops held across the city in the lead-up to the event.
‘Our goal is to get all our sevens fans to join our world record attempt for the largest-ever Amapiano dance-off at a rugby match,’ said Blake Williams, founder of the Street Stylers.
Workshops and festive spirit
The first dance workshop will take place at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre on 23 November, with additional sessions planned around Cape Town. Blitzbok players and local influencers will make special appearances to engage with fans.
‘This event celebrates South Africa’s festive spirit. The games, the lively parties, and the colourful costumes are a whole vibe not to be missed,’ Oberholzer added.
