Ian Cameron, the leader of Action Society in Gugulethu, and the person who had a major face-off with Police Minister Bheki Cele last month has shared a disturbing video on Twitter that once again highlights an ongoing battle: farm attacks.
Cameron was celebrated by the South African community after standing up to Cele in a press conference. Cele was lathered with the reality of his incompetence, which resulted in the Police Minister telling Cameron to “shut up”.

Since then, Cameron’s security efforts have gained major traction on social media. And now, he’s throwing farm attacks into the spotlight. Action Society has been a strong supporter of police being devolved in the Western Cape.

Farm attacks in the Western Cape continue to occur at a disturbing rate.
The highest number of farm murders occurred between 1997 and 1998, when 153 murders were recorded, while the year with the highest number of recorded farm attacks occurred between 2001 and 2002. This specific year saw 1 069 attacks take place.
There have been nearly 13 000 farm attacks (reported) in the past two decades.

Cameron captions the video: “Video where a brave farmer fights back! Not sure where this happened, but this guy shot the daylights out of these attackers (apparently a farm attack) on Sunday night. He disarmed one attacker and used the attacker’s firearm on the three thugs/cowards.”
In an update, he said: “The hero that fought back was working in his workshop at his small-holding on Sunday night (21/08/22) in Kameeldrift West when the three suspects attacked him. It is alleged that the firearm was actually his own that he managed to grab and fight back.”
Tweeps are debating as to whether this was a farm attack or burglary:
“Why say farm attack? Looks like an attempted burglary. You’re giving agenda,” said one person on Cameron’s post.
However, another commenter said: “Absolutely not. It’s a farm attack because this took place on the farm, his farm, farm’s Malema said to be taken back! Truth and facts are; we are not going to let them win. Burglary is sugar coating the agenda.”
