The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is inviting Western Cape residents to weigh in on the future of voting as public consultations on electronic voting (e-voting) get underway this month.
Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse will lead the drive, which runs from 12 to 30 September and covers every region of the province. The consultations form part of a six-month national programme designed to give citizens, political parties and civil society a direct voice in shaping the country’s approach to elections, as per SmileFM.
Feedback gathered during these sessions will feed into the IEC’s Policy Discussion Document on e-Voting. Once refined, the final policy will be tabled before Parliament and other decision-makers to determine whether South Africa should adopt electronic voting systems in future.

Communities across the Western Cape will have their turn at the following venues: Khayelitsha (12 September), Somerset West (15 September), Malmesbury Town Hall (16 September), Worcester Town Hall (22 September), Hermanus Auditorium (26 September), George Community Hall (29 September) and Oudtshoorn Banquet Hall (30 September).
The IEC is expecting strong participation from political organisations, youth groups, NGOs, NPOs, trade unions, education bodies, faith communities and institutions representing persons with disabilities.
National timelines indicate that all consultations will be finalised by the end of September 2025. October will see the review of submissions, with a Green Paper expected in March 2026.
Residents who cannot attend in person can still make their voices heard by submitting comments online via the IEC’s dedicated e-voting page or by emailing [email protected].
The deadline for written submissions is 30 September 2025.
