After the call came in, the DFW advanced emergency first responders arrived on the scene and discovered a 12-year-old boy who was barely responsive. They immediately administered first aid, and with the help of DFW control, an ambulance was called to transport the boy to a hospital.

While attending to the boy, the responders learnt that he had been involved in an earlier accident and had been brought to the church’s backyard by other passengers in the car. As they loaded the child into the ambulance, the responders began to search for the other passengers.

With the help of an ADT AR officer who had joined the search, they found two other injured passengers in an informal settlement nearby. One of the passengers had been taken to the hospital by local residents, while the other was examined on-site by the DFW crew and found to have a head injury and concussion. Another ambulance was organised by the DFW controllers in the radio control room to transport the injured passenger to the hospital.
Further investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle did not have a licence and had fled the earlier accident scene. The DFW Fire and Rescue crew focused solely on providing emergency medical care to the injured while the Paarl traffic and Paarl police dealt with the legal aspects of the accident.
