An investigation has uncovered evidence suggesting that the cartels operating within Eskom are responsible for certain instances of malpractice and sabotage at the facilities.
There is evidence suggesting the presence of no less than four criminal cartels operating within Eskom for several years.
According to intelligence reports acquired by Daily Maverick, two high-ranking officials in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet have been linked to four criminal syndicates that are operating within Eskom.

These cartels have been identified as responsible for instances of malpractice and sabotage at Eskom facilities. Furthermore, it has been reported that equipment purchases have been made without the actual machinery being delivered.
The investigation into Eskom by journalist Kevin Bloom of The Daily Maverick follows former CEO André de Ruyter’s explosive allegations against a senior member of the African National Congress (ANC), whom he accused of being involved in internal corruption.
Bloom said, “Patterns clearly point to one involvement of a minister, we strongly feel two are involved and think that both are involved, at the moment we have intelligence on this to provide evidence to confirm this.”
According to Bloom, the operations of the cartels were untraceable through forensic audits.
“They have insiders in certain power stations, often a senior engineer in a distribution or generation division.”
“From there, bribes are paid all the way down the line – there are a lot of operations that they perform – they have people all through the lines to sign off Eskom’s forms,” Bloom concludes.
