Show me a human on this planet that doesn’t love the king of all vegetables – the humble potato. Roast them, fry them, mash them and now, milk them?
There’s a new trend on the horizon and we’re not too sure how to feel about it.
As vegans look for ways to remain innovative when it comes to their food choices, they seem to have roped potatoes into things. A recent report released by British supermarket Waitrose claims that potato milk is set to be the biggest food trend of 2022 with vegan aisles eagerly waiting to stock the product.
While potatoes are delicious no matter which way you consume them, it’s an increase in dairy allergies and concerns regarding the environmental impact of meat that has placed the humble spud in the spotlight when it comes to plant-based alternatives, reports Totally Vegan Buzz.
Unfortunately, potatoes don’t exactly give off a “milk-producing” kind of vibe. So, just how did this alternative come to be?
Well, the idea for potato milk came about in 2017 when Eva Tornberg, a food researcher at Lund University in Sweden announced her brilliant plan to take boiled potatoes and combine them with rapeseed oil providing a milk-like beverage for those looking to ditch soy or oat milk, as per IOL.
According to Well + Good, it’s a pretty nutritional substitute too. Bursting with good protein, potassium, fibre and Vitamin C, potato milk could prove to be a healthy alternative for those looking to ease up on their dairy intake.
But will it be as delicious as your mom’s mashed potatoes? Unfortunately, you won’t be able to sample this intriguing product as it’s currently only available in the UK and Sweden.
